Gordon Athlete Signs Professional Soccer Contract

Gordon College senior Matt Horth from Akron, Ohio, has recently contracted to play with the Atlanta Silverbacks, a professional soccer club in the North American Soccer League (NASL).

Horth, senior-captain for the Fighting Scots, controlled the midfield for much of his four-year career, tallying 36 goals on his way to four consecutive The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) First Team selections. The TCCC also honored him as Rookie of the Year in 2007 after he netted 15 goals in 18 games. Horth was also selected by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) to the NCAA Division III All-New England First Team following his junior and senior seasons.

"Matt has worked exceptionally hard for this new challenge in his life, and we are all really happy for him," said Jake DeClute, head men’s soccer coach at Gordon College. "The volume of work he has put in here has been phenomenal. He’s a student of the game, and extremely coachable. We will be cheering for him every step of the way and hope this might open the door for some other players in the future.”

Horth joins an Atlanta program that is returning to competition under the newly formed NASL. Their season is set to kick-off on Saturday, April 9 as the Silverbacks host the NSC Minnesota Stars.
